The Silence is Deafening at Big Bass Lake

I Had a hot steaming bowl of three way chili tonight much like Steak n Shake makes it. I added a little spicy chicken to it. Do you know how cold it is out there tonight? The silence is deafening tonight because the word deafening is frozen shut!

As I gaze out my window tonight I am amazed. That small piece of glass is all that’s between my warm house and the frozen tundra out there. I think I’ll sleep like a log tonight. But before I do that, a second bowl of that chili sounds like a great idea to me. By the way,  HAPPY VETERANS DAY  !y

Big Bass Lake Continual Weed Problem by Big Buck

Big Bass Lake has been invaded by Eurasian Milfoil, a divesting invasive weed that was more than likely introduced from the public boat landing. It is a very aggressive weed that over time will take over the native weed population and choke it out. It is currently being treated with some chemical treatment by the Big Bass Board and Elk Township. But some propose using now a third chemical that could have devastating effects on the lakes health.

Some have proposed natural control of the weed with the North American Weevil that seems to love Eurasian Milfoil. It is a natural predator found in almost every lake in North America that usually dines on American Milfoil but once it tried Eurasian Milfoil it liked it much better. The weed can never be eradicated, this is a fact . It must be managed forever. So the question is, keep a lifetime of chemicals going into the lake or start to manage it with chemical and natural, slowly giving the Weevil time to dine and take over for the chemical?

The Pointe of Haunted Island

One thing I haven’t mentioned a whole lot was on how many fallen trees surrounded the Haunted Island. That by itself added to the mystique of the island. If one where to row all around that island they could see what I mean. Almost every square inch of that shoreline is littered with dead trees.

In fact, it makes it quite difficult to row close into the island as it is an obstacle course of trees and branches.  In the 1970’s there was only one safe entry area and even that had an old rickety dock.  Yet, in the summer months, the area where the Haunted House was located was near impossible to see from any shoreline area.

The southern most Pointe of that island was where an old shack was once to be found in the 1950’s.  There were only two walls standing, if you could call it that, during those days.  It had all but disappeared in the 1960’s.

At night, in near pitch darkness, it serves its name well and sometimes th cry of a loon can be heard which adds to the spooky atmosphere of Haunted Island.  Add to that all the fallen trees about the island and it all adds up to one most interesting place to visit at the stroke of midnight.

Aboard the SS Badger

How about a trip on the SS badger from Ludington Michigan to Wisconsin? I have a video for you today about that. Badger ferry boat. You can even play Bingo aboard the Badger.

If you get tired of Badger bingo take a walk topside or just relax in a lounge chair and enjoy the view. It takes about 2 hours to Cross Lake Michigan.

You never know what kind of weather you’ll be facing aboard the Badger so you might want to take along seasick pills just in case. You can even have your own cabin.

There’s a canteen aboard and an arcade for the children. When in Ludington you might want to consider a trip both ways. Hope you enjoyed your cruise news.

Stand up NFL and Bless the USA

GoGod Bless the USAd Bless the USA Lee Greenwood sings God Bless the USA. This is a great patriotic song and please enjoy it.4087dab25e34bbed9a71e271f02fa6b6 all professional athletes that refused to stand for the national anthem should listen to the words of this patriotic song. They play their favorite sports while American troops are dying for them. And they have the audacity to kneel during the national anthem? Maybe they should have a tour of duty fighting the enemies of our nation? Think about that professional athletes and listen to the patriotic words of Lee Greenwood.

The Drenched Lighthouse

It never ceases to amaze me as to how high the water goes upon this lighthouse off the shores of Ludington, Michigan.  I love to photograph this location whenever storms hit the area or even during times of high winds.  The sheer power of the waves impresses me more and more each time I capture their images on camera.

In winter you can often feel the stinging sand as the winds whip them around almost into a frenzy.  My husband Mike often feels that when he jogs along the shores as I capture the movement of the waves on film.  Between this location and the Sauble River outlet, I spend a great deal of time trying to capture the best shots I can get.

I know this lighthouse gets repainted every so often and that is because of the pounding that paint gets with the never ceasing pounding of those waves upon it.  Sheer majesty!
