Devere Fair: Wabash High School’s Greatest Football Coach

This is how the students at Wabash High School Remembered Devere Fair who was the greatest coach in Wabash High School history. It 1966 he coached the Apaches to a 9-1 record. They haven’t done that well since. He went on to Decatur Central in Indianapolis where the stadium is still named after him.

Coach Fair is now in retirement in Carmel. His players on both Wabash and Decatur Central speak very highly of him. I thought he was one of the greatest men I ever met. He was my physical science teacher. He had a great sense of humor and was an overall great man. I became a better person for knowing him. I wish him all the best in his retirement.

You still have those glasses, coach! He also has a heart of gold for all those that knew him.

The Haunted House at Midnight

2

One thing about the Haunted Island that I haven’t mentioned much is what seems like many burial mounds not far from the house that extends into the woods of the island. However the direction of these mounds is away from the pier in the opposite direction so not many of our trips have taken us in that direction.

In fact, outside of the Haunted House and the path leading to it, our trips haven’t gone much further. There once was another house on the island close to the lakefront but it burned down some time back. The majority of this island is forest covered. Thus the burial mounds are rather interesting in that the young couple who once lived on the island might offer an explanation for the wife’s disappearance. At night the effect of the burial mounds is rather spooky to say the least.

One of the boys discovered those seven to eight mounds when running in that direction and having tripped over one of them. That area might have been some sort of cemetary at one time. At any rate that made our trip to the Haunted House that year even more mysterious than any other.

Ludington Lighthouse- Night or Day

Be it day or night, One thing never Changes and that is that the Ludington lighthouse Is spectacular. Have you ever walked the breakwater? That’s a fantastic half mile. Low wave walking would be best. Take your whole family as it is great exercise. You might even try fishing off the breakwater. Or a sketch on a canvas. The possibilities are endless. Have fun!

How About One of These at Big Bass Lake?

A submarine vessel at Big Bass Lake. You could check out the best place to fish this way. Or to actually see what’s at the bottom of the lake.

But there’s also other possibilities. You can sneak up on someone at night and surface and watch them set a rowing record to shore. You can also take this baby just over the surface of the lake.

Just imagine how fun this would be? You could Buzz right past the speed boats leaving them standing in awe. And suppose you’re only up here for the weekend? How in the world are you going to get home? Well?

You sure won’t have to get an airline ticket. This vessel has all you need. You can also use it at Loon Lake and Sauble Lake as well. Just don’t ask me about the price tag. And you don’t have to even use the public landing. This will even set the yellow plane on edge.

Sauble Lake and River

The Sauble River headwaters Are located on the south east side of Sauble Lake, one of four I might add with channels Leading to each one. The Benish family once owned a cottage on this lake. Have any of you fished on this lake? Of all the areas lakes, Which has the best fishing? Let us know either way by way of a comment.
