The Ageless Tree

From my earliest memories in 1950, This tree Just doesn’t change. Even Fierce Michigan winters Cannot take his tree down. Ice storms Aren’t up to the challenge of the tree. I often wonder why my grandpa kept this singular tree among the hundreds he and his sons had chopped down? But there it stands year after year. It’s a beautiful tree standing alone in a field of green.

Innovative Soup

Kids love soup but how about weasel soup? Maybe that’s more for the mNow here is a soup that any kid would love and at the bottom of the can might be some real bubble gum. Our next soup would be tasty for anyone in the family.

After consuming this soup you might have a tendency to slow down. Oh well much for soup today. Can you believe that it was kind of a boring day in Michigan today.

The Marion YMCA Gym

This gymnasium got a lot of use with the YMCA Kids. We played kickball, dodgeball, wiffle ball, basketball, and wrestling in this gymnasium. Kids came after school and we had the gymnasium just for the kids until 6 p.m. The kids could also use the first floor game room and the swimming pool. This was a great facility for all activities but it is now closed down as the building needs a lot of repair. If any former kids have comments to make do so now.

The Perfect Storm at The Haunted Island

During a trip to the Haunted Island with the Marion Boys Club on a night just like this was the only prop necessary for a very spooky night. No ghost stories needed to be told that evening as the weather did the trick. And even though the wind was howling and the lake had whitecaps, not a drop fell that night.

When we got to the island the boys poured out of the boat and up the short hill that led to the path to the haunted house. They could hear the wind whistle through the trees providing a real errie sound. Many of the trees on that island were pine and the sound was superb for a night of haunting. The boys were so close together that you couldn’t fit a piece of paper between them. I like closeness on an outing as you never have to worry about straglers.

Once at the house more errie sounds were heard as, since the house has no glass where windows ought to be, the wind provided even more special effects. When a piece of cardboard was carried by the wind out the front door every kid on that trip hit the ground faster than a heartbeat. They thought they had seen their first real ghost with nary a ghost buster among them.

Yet on the way back to Marion after that trip was over there was nary a mention of how scared they were that night. I must have brought back some different kids?

A Windy Vacation

ohohisland Mike took me on a second honeymoon to an island in the Pacific On May 11. I was having a great time taking in the sun on the beach when all of a sudden it got very cloudy. At first I thought it was nothing but then it got darker and darker. As I drew in my head and began to turn around I took In This Storm. It literally blew me away and I had trouble even walking back to the house we had rented. This wasn’t a hurricane but  a sudden downdraft that turned  severe. A lot of damage on the island but we were okay. What a second honeymoon !

The Kennedy Lodge at Ward Hill

the Kennedy Brothers made many repairs to the lodge. They wanted parties to be held here. A plan for a sled Hill was developed. And a warming station Atop The Sled Hill was built. Volleyball courts wear added outside and summer trips were planned away from the facility. Perhaps they made too many elaborate plans for this facility is no longer there property. Tim Kennedy is still in school and plans to try to resurrect the property are still in the works. I’m not sure if the other Kennedy brother plans to be involved again. Does anyone know who the present owner is?

Michigan Highway 116

M-116 begins in Ludington at the intersection of William Street and Ludington Avenue. It is at this intersection where US 10 turns southward and heads to the Ludington-Manitowoc ferry docks. From here, M-116 continues westward along Ludington Avenue for about one-half mile before turning north on Lakeshore Drive. The road continues as North Lakeshore Drive until passing the Lincoln Hills Golf Club where it curves westward towards the lakeshore as it approaches the park. The route runs along the coast of Lake Michigan for the remainder of its route, through sand dunes, until reaching its northern terminus at the entrance to Ludington State Park.

Ludington State Park is bound to the west by Lake Michigan, the north by sand dunes and to the east by Hamlin Lake. As such, M-116 provides the only road access to the park from the south. The park encompasses 5,300 acres  and is home to several types of ecosystems such as forests and sand dunes as well as Lake Michigan, Big Sable River and Hamlin Lake.  M-116 was first designated on June 28, 1928, from the north city limit of Ludington north to the Sable River, but not all of it was built and open to traffic. It was extended southerly on July 15, 1931, into the city of Ludington to US 10. There was a new alignment closer to the lakeshore opened on March 14, 1933. Later that year on July12,, the original, unbuilt routing was cancelled. The northern end was extended on October 31, 1935, to encompass the Big Sable River bridge opened in 1934.

In all, M-116 encodmpasses 7.1 miles with the largest section along the prestine beaches of Lake Michigan.  Parking spaces are designated for having your own private beach at several junction points along the highway.

Winter Snow at Big Bass Lake

Is it nice to forget about Snow? You bet. After a snowy winter it will be great to see the lake like this. Big bass lake is known as an All seasons lake. If you miss Icefishing, ride in a boat instead. Or if you miss the boat from the summer There’s always the snowmobile. There’s something for everyone at big Bass Lake.

Inside Na-Tah-Ka

This Bar & Grill is owned by Larry Bender and is the popular place to eat in the area. I believe it is the only restaurant in the greater Big Bass Lake area. They have excellent chicken and fish dinners. You can always catch the Detroit Lions or tigers on television. They even have a pool table for entertainment. But they do more than just serve food. They also take trips. The Bar and Grill Restaurant is the place to go in this area to have a good time and be with your friends. Bender also owns a small store next door to get all the supplies you need.

Getting your Car Washed at Big Bass Lake

This is the best way to get your car washed at Big Bass Lake. And you don’t even have to get out of your car to do it. At the same time you can take a tour of the lake and when you’re done you can dry off your car and polish it   It beats a speedboat because if you want to pass you just honk your horn. If you have a political bumper sticker you can prove to anyone that your candidate is all wet. I wonder what the fish think when they see underwater tires? Maybe they’re thinking it’s a new way of fishing. Oh well at least you don’t have to haul your boat out at the public landing. You just drive out. Maybe they can get it some like a dog where they can shake the water off themselves?
